Hoots that on the phone?

My step-niece wanted a phone cover for her blackberry, and is keen on owls, so I designed this for her Birthday present!  It’s quite easy, and a good introduction to cabling or knitting in the round.

I used about 25 g of dk yarn (if that)

Terms used:
C4F: put 2 sts on a cable needle, hold in front, k2, then k2 from cable needle
C4B: put 2 sts on a cable needle, hold in back, k2, then k2 from cable needle

Cast on 36 st using 3.75mm needles, or if you are clever you can use a figure 8 cast on (but in this dark yarn I found it a lot trickier than with aran in the past)
Transfer onto 3 dpns (being careful not to twist the stitches), 12 st on each and with the fourth dpn
Knit 9 rounds.

Owl pattern
Round 1 +2: p5, k8, p10, k8, p5
Round 3: p5, c4b, c4f, p10, c4b, c4f, p5
Round 4 – 10: p5, k8, p10, k8, p5
Round 11: p5, c4b, c4f, p10, c4b, c4f, p5
Round 12: p5, k8, p10, k8, p5
Round 13+14: (p5, k1, p2, k2, p2, k1, p5) x2
Round 15+16:  p5, k8, p10, k8, p5
Round 17: p5, c4b, c4f, p10, c4b, c4f, p5
Round 18:  p5, k8, p10, k8, p5

k 16 rounds
Change to 3mm dpns and knit 1 round 2×2 rib (k2, p2 to end)
Eyelet round: (k2, yo,p2tog) to end
Rib 2×2 for 4 further rows and then cast off

Make a 40 cm icord with two 3mm dpns

Make up
Weave the cord through the eyelets, sew up the bottom seam and if you want sew 4 tiny buttons on for the 2 owls eyes!

All done! Pop your phone in to keep it cosy, but I can’t guarantee it will keep it perfectly safe, especially if you drop it down the loo or pop it through the washing machine as is my norm!

Hope that you get the hang of all the needles quickly. It feels really funny to start off with, but persevere and you should get the hang of it!

I did! I gave your pattern a try (with a few adjustments) and made my own Blackberry case. I’m really glad you wrote out the pattern as it helped me understand how patterns actually work when knitting in the round. You’ll find a picture on my latest post. I will practice, practice, practice! Thanks for your help 🙂

  4. […] needles, I had to set aside my own pattern for the owl and work with the one designed by Jammymummy.  Our Blackberry cases are similar but I tweaked the pattern to have a thinner stockinette along […]
